What Is teamup4type1?
My name is Cricket Butler, and although not diabetic, my family lives with this disease every minute of every day. Myself and my husband, Glenn, have two sons, Marshall and Grayson. Marshall is 7 years old and Grayson is his 6 year old brother who has Type 1 diabetes. Fortunately, Grayson is not alone due to our family and wonderful friends, who take an active role in his health, which requires constant attention. Together, we have all learned to live as active a life as we did prior to Grayson's diagnosis.
With the support of my family, I have entered the 2009 Tour Divide Mountain Bike Race. After entering the race, I decided this would be a great and fun way to raise awareness and money for JDRF. For all families, and especially children living with Type 1 diabetes, remember to never stop having fun, playing, and dreaming! Our goal is simple, to find a cure for not only Grayson but all children living with this dreaded disease. By raising money and donating 100% of the proceeds to JDRF, everyone who takes part in this event will have helped find a cure for diabetes!
Two completely different things, yet with the common thread being either could be considered the most challenging obstacle an individual will ever face. The idea to utilize the world's longest mountain bike race to raise awareness and money for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) is both epic and exciting. Both have the power to make us reach deep within, making us stronger than we might realize. The main objective for Team up for Type 1 is to show the world that even though diabetes has dramatically impacted our lives, anything is still possible. For a family with a Type 1 diabetic child, it is hard not to let this 24 hour, 7 days a week disease take over and rule our lives.
Follow my preparation for the race and see how my family prepares for a month without "Mommy". Once the race begins, you can follow my progress via the Tour Divide webpage and track my location using Google maps and the SPOT GPS device that all racers are required to carry. The race will be easy, the hardest part will be leaving my family and trusting others to care for Grayson's health needs. This race will be fulfilling one of my dreams and through it, I hope Grayson will realize that he can accomplish anything he sets his mind to.
